Cranford NJ Bagel Shops: The Complete Guide

Cranford's Best Bagels, Bagel Supreme, Big E's Bagel Bistro, and newcomer Belle's Bagels — here's how all four Cranford bagel shops actually compare.

Cranford's Bagel Scene, Fully Mapped: Four Shops, Four Signature Sandwiches, and One Brand-New Local Favorite

Cranford has quietly built one of the more genuinely distinct bagel lineups of any town our size — Cranford's Best Bagels and Deli has been the go-to on South Avenue East for years, Bagel Supreme anchors Raritan Road with a fuller diner-style menu, Big E's Bagel Bistro has been naming sandwiches after the owner's own kids and the local high school mascot since 2010, and this past fall, Belle's Bagels opened right across from the train station as a genuine homegrown newcomer, started by a Cranford couple who developed their own recipe before ever opening the doors.

We're covering this the same way we covered Westfield's bagel scene, because Cranford's four shops are just as genuinely different from each other, and the newest arrival has a better origin story than almost any small business we've written about. Here's how to tell all four apart, and what each one is actually known for.

The Lay of the Land

Cranford's bagel shops split cleanly across town: Cranford's Best Bagels and Deli sits at 107 South Avenue East, Belle's Bagels is at 11 North Avenue East, directly across from the train station and steps from Eastman Plaza, Big E's Bagel Bistro holds down 123 North Union Avenue, and Bagel Supreme is a bit further out at 669 Raritan Road. Between the two North Avenue shops alone, commuters walking to the train station now pass two completely different bagel shops within a couple of blocks of each other.

Cranford's Best Bagels and Deli: The Long-Running Local Standard

107 South Avenue East

Cranford's Best Bagels and Deli has built its reputation on doing the fundamentals better than anyone else in town, and it backs that up with genuinely rare hours: open every single day of the year, 5 a.m. to 5 p.m., holidays included.

What it's known for: Billing itself as the only shop in Cranford making bagels truly by hand — boiled in water and baked fresh throughout the entire day rather than in a single morning batch — Cranford's Best leans hard into the classic New York bagel-shop model. A nice, specific touch: the shop dyes bagels green and red for holidays and other special occasions, a small detail regulars look forward to each season. Beyond the bagels, it runs a full deli operation, takes corporate accounts, and is available through Grubhub, Uber Eats, and DoorDash for anyone who'd rather not leave the office.

Who it's for: Anyone who wants the reassurance of an all-day, every-day bagel shop that's been getting the basics right for years, with deli service to match.

Bagel Supreme: The Fuller Breakfast-and-Lunch Menu

669 Raritan Road

Bagel Supreme is part of a small multi-location New Jersey chain, and the Cranford shop leans into being more of a full breakfast-and-lunch restaurant built around a bagel core rather than a bagel shop that happens to also serve sandwiches.

What it's known for: Bagels that are hand-rolled, kettle-boiled, and baked fresh daily, described by the shop itself as "perfectly chewy" with "a golden, crisp exterior" — but the real draw at this location is the depth of the surrounding menu: pancakes, French toast, waffles, and omelets alongside wraps, paninis, salads, and Boar's Head-brand sandwiches, plus specialty cream cheese spreads and its own brewed coffee program. It's open seven days a week, 5 a.m. to 3 p.m., and specifically promotes ordering directly through its own website over third-party delivery apps, framing it as a way to "support your favorite local bagel shop" more directly. It also runs a real catering program for corporate meetings and events.

Who it's for: Anyone who wants a genuine sit-down breakfast or lunch option, not just a quick bagel and coffee — the shop on this list most likely to satisfy a table that can't agree on pancakes versus a bagel sandwich.

Big E's Bagel Bistro: The Shop With Sandwiches Named After the Owner's Kids

123 North Union Avenue

This is the shop with, by a wide margin, the best origin story on this list. Big E's Bagel Bistro opened in February 2010, at the former Bagel America site, under owner Eric Welle — a former Wall Street broker turned culinary school graduate who decided to trade finance for bagels.

What it's known for: Genuinely hand-rolled bagels, sourced from a Union supplier and boiled and baked in-house, which the shop points to as the reason no two bagels come out quite identical. But the real personality here is in the menu names. Welle initially had no plans to get creative with sandwich names, until his wife, Sue, pushed him to have more fun with it — the result includes sandwiches named directly after the couple's three children (Chris's Calamity, E.J.'s Favorite, and Gabriel), a "Little Rascals"-themed kids' menu built around the classic television characters, and the shop's most locally beloved creation, the Cranford Cougar — grilled chicken, fresh mozzarella, tomato, and honey mustard, named as a direct tribute to Cranford High School's own mascot. For heartier appetites, the Big E Bomber breakfast sandwich piles on eggs, cheese, meat, and home fries in one order. The shop keeps relatively tight weekday hours, 6:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday and 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. on weekends, and has a track record of supporting local causes, including hosting fundraisers for Cranford High School's Project Graduation.

Who it's for: Anyone who wants a shop with genuine local personality and a menu that clearly reflects one family's actual sense of humor, not a corporate branding exercise.

Belle's Bagels: Cranford's Brand-New Homegrown Favorite

11 North Avenue East

This is the newest shop on the list, and it's the one with the most purely local story of all four. Belle's Bagels opened in October 2025, founded by Cayla and Dave Ricca, a couple who already lived in Cranford and developed their own bagel recipe before ever opening a storefront. The location, directly across from the Cranford train station and steps from Eastman Plaza, was chosen specifically with commuters in mind.

What it's known for: A genuinely broad flavor lineup for a brand-new shop — ten varieties in total, including plain, everything, sesame, egg, whole wheat, poppy, salt, sunflower seed, French toast, and a blueberry cinnamon swirl — paired with cream cheese options including scallion, vegetable, and jalapeño. The sandwich menu leans playful and specific: "Bacon Me Hot," "Sweet and Salty," and "Lox Me Up" headline the lineup, alongside chicken cutlet sandwiches and sides like tater tots and hash browns. The shop opens at 6 a.m. on weekdays specifically to catch early train commuters, and runs seven days a week. The Riccas have been direct about their motivation: this is their way of giving back to the same community where they're raising their own daughter, and they've built the shop explicitly around being a genuine neighborhood spot rather than a quick transactional stop.

Who it's for: Anyone who wants to support a genuinely new, locally founded small business, and anyone commuting out of the Cranford train station looking for a bagel spot practically on the platform.

"What I love about Big E's is that the menu is basically a family scrapbook," says Marina Fridman-Rybner of The GAMA Team at Corcoran Sawyer Smith. "A sandwich named for the high school mascot, sandwiches named for his own kids — that's not something a corporate chain ever does, and it's exactly the kind of detail that makes a town feel like a town instead of a strip mall."

What a New Bagel Shop Says About Downtown Cranford

We think it's worth noting what it means that a brand-new, independently founded bagel shop — not a chain, not a franchise, just two Cranford residents with their own recipe — opened directly across from the train station and has, by all accounts, been embraced by the town. That's a genuine vote of confidence in downtown Cranford's foot traffic and community support from two people who live here and were willing to bet their own savings on it, which is a different, and in some ways more meaningful, signal than a national chain deciding to add another location.

"Cayla and Dave betting on their own recipe and their own town says a lot," says Galina Kaplan, Marina's partner at The GAMA Team. "We meet plenty of buyers who love Cranford for the train and the downtown, but stories like Belle's are the reason people actually fall for the town itself, not just the commute."

Which One Should You Actually Go To?

If you want dependable, all-day, every-day bagels and a full deli behind them, Cranford's Best Bagels and Deli is the safe, proven choice. If your table can't agree between pancakes and a bagel sandwich, Bagel Supreme's fuller menu solves that problem. If you want a shop with real local character — and a sandwich named after your kid's own high school mascot — Big E's Bagel Bistro is worth the visit on personality alone. And if you're catching an early train or simply want to support Cranford's newest homegrown small business, Belle's Bagels is right there waiting, seven days a week, starting at 6 a.m.

As with Westfield, honestly, the best move might just be trying all four and picking your own favorite.
